Questions about the CNAME lookup

What is a CNAME record?

A record that makes one name an alias of another. Resolvers follow it and use the records of the target.

Can a root domain have a CNAME?

No. A root domain such as yourbrand.com holds SOA and NS records, and a CNAME cannot sit beside other records.

Why do tracking domains use CNAME records?

A custom tracking domain points to the sequencer's tracking server with a CNAME, so the links in your email use your own domain.
