Free SOA record lookup

Read a domain's SOA record: its primary name server, contact, serial number and timers.

  • Free, with no signup
  • Runs in your browser

What your result means

SOA found

The zone's start of authority record, with each timer in seconds and in plain words.

Unusual timers

Retry is not shorter than refresh, expire is under a week, or negative caching is over a day.

No SOA record

Every zone needs an SOA record. Run the lookup on the root domain.

Questions about the SOA lookup

What does the SOA serial number do?

Secondary name servers compare it to see if the zone changed. Many DNS hosts raise it on every change.

What is the negative cache time?

How long resolvers remember that a name does not exist. A long time delays a new record from showing.

Why does my subdomain show the parent's SOA?

A subdomain inside the same zone has no SOA of its own, so the lookup shows the SOA of the zone it belongs to.
